Room Design Holiday Tips

By James Charles

It’s always a lot of fun to make some room design changes for the holidays. Here are some tips.
  • Think outside of the box when it comes to centerpieces and other table decorations.  While flowers are always nice, adding the unexpected will be noticed.  For example, try using ornaments on your table with low candles for mood lighting.  For height, fill a hurricane or two with garland, ornaments and/or candy canes.

  • Replace your regular kitchen towels and oven mitts with your holiday ones to add great color to your kitchen.

  • Change out your photos in your home.  For example, putting in pictures of family and friends playing in the snow helps to carry out the holiday theme.  You can keep the seasonal photos behind one another in the frame for a quick change year after year.

  • Just by changing your accent pillows on the sofa or chair, you can give your room that holiday cheer.

  • If you are a plant lover, change some of your plants that are in common areas to those that are available during the winter season.  Such examples are: Christmas cactus, paper whites and poinsettias.

  • Have some spare time?  A great craft which is also kid friendly is to make your own wreath. Visit your local craft store and buy foam in the shape of a wreath and some thin wire (with wire cutters).  The foam will act as your base and the wire is to help attach items.  Almost anything can be added. Some examples: leaves, shells, ornaments, wrapped candy, bells and even moss (remember the moss will need to have water added occasionally) will work.

  • Remember, when purchasing holiday décor for your home it’s best to stick with colors that work with you existing décor.  The items will still have a great impact on your home and you won’t have to change out everything.
